One of the things I love most about custom picture framing is working on projects for customers that hold special meaning to them, and hearing their interesting stories about these special items. One such example is this hockey jersey shadow box that I completed in 2014 for Newcap Radio's Halifax station, Q104 FM.
BJ Burke is a morning announcer at Q104, and is currently battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma for the third time. A fundraising event had been held for BJ and his family, and to show their support for him, Newcap purchased this autographed Nathan MacKinnon jersey (NHL rookie season playing for the Colorado Avalanche). Newcap wanted to frame the jersey and put it on display in the office, in honour of BJ and his courageous fight against this horrible disease.
To enhance the design, I suggested the inclusion of additional Nathan MacKinnon and Colorado Avalanche memorabilia. I visited a local sports memorabilia shop, D & M Sports Cards, and found an over-sized hockey card, a Colorado Avalanche pin, and a sheet of logo decals. I used these items to design a 'mini-frame' which was floated above the bottom portion of the jersey.
The hockey card was encapsulated with a piece of archival clear polyester film so no mounting adhesive comes in contact with the card. Tru Vue's Museum glass was chosen for its outstanding anti-reflective coating and 99% UV protection. The moulding and mats were selected to complement the jersey's colours.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to BJ Burke and his family in hopes that he will win this fight.
