One of the things I love best about framing is that frames often will tell a story. In this particular case, my customer had saved memorabilia from her daughter’s hockey career, which included her time playing on a variety of local, provincial, national and international teams. In all, there were 25 items displayed in this shadow box including nameplates, athlete’s ID cards from tournaments, a badge and pin.
The design for this actually went fairly quickly, considering there were so many pieces of different sized memorabilia. We both started laying out the items on my table and within 10 minutes, with a bit of fine tuning, we came up with an asymmetrical design that my customer liked. To add interest to the design, 3 items were chosen to be floated higher than the remaining items, giving a 3D effect.
The frame was built from a classic black shadow box moulding from Larson-Juhl’s Alto collection. The mats were conservation mats from Peterboro Matboard and Tru Vue’s conservation clear glass was chosen for its 99% UV protection.
This was such a lovely gift from the parents to their daughter to mark the time that had played such a big part in all their lives.
