My customer had the winning bid for some Halifax Mooseheads hockey memorabilia (from the years 2012-2013) at a charity auction and wanted to display the items in a shadow box. The Mooseheads are our local major junior hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and won the Memorial Cup Championship in 2013. There were a number of autographed items... a couple photos autographed by Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin, a 2012-2013 Mooseheads team photo, an official game puck from the 2013 Memorial Cup, and a Prospects Hockey magazine with Jonathan Drouin on its cover.
My customer, who plays hockey, wanted the design to reflect the chaos of a hockey game, so he didn’t want the items to be displayed perfectly straight. The photos and the magazine were displayed slanted around the hockey puck, almost like a face-off. The Mooseheads team colours were used in the mini-mats surrounding the photos. The Prospects magazine and hockey puck were both mounted using clear archival polyester film.
The shadow box spacers provided a ‘surprise’ design feature which is really only visible if the shadow box is viewed at an angle... Starting at the bottom corner of the left-hand spacer, running along the top, and back down the right-hand spacer, I displayed the Mooseheads roster from 2013 Memorial Cup, including the names of the head coach and the general manager. Each player’s number, name, and position were displayed alphabetically, and along the bottom spacer, the title “2013 MEMORIAL CUP CHAMPIONS” was shown.
A classic black shadow box moulding from Larson-Juhl’s Confetti collection was paired with conservation quality matboards from Peterboro Matboards and Nielsen-Bainbridge. Tru Vue’s conservation clear glass was chosen for its 99% UV protection.
My customer was thrilled with how the shadow box turned out.
